If you notice your drains, be it in the kitchen or bathroom, aren’t working as well as they could be and emit an unpleasant odour,  it’s likely because there is a build up of grease, hair, decomposing food and other waste.  You want to break that stuff down and push it through the pipe so it can move on to its final destination, instead of stinking up and slowing down your drain.  Here’s a simple solution.

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 cup vinegar
  • 2 cups boiling water

Put the baking soda down the drain first, and follow that up with the vinegar.  Let the solution bubble and fizz; that’s what’s going to break down the gunk.  Follow that up about 15 minutes later with 2 cups of boiling water.  This helps to rinse out any of the loosened debris and rinse it out.  Don’t use this method with a commercial drain cleaner.  Once a week, mix 1/2 cup salt with 1 cup boiling water.  Dump that down the drain and keep it in tip-top shape!

  1. The combination of baking soda and vinegar can really work wonders. By the way, baking soda freshens up the smell of drains, as well.

Every day or once every two days, sprinkle some baking soda over the drain of your kitchen sink and wash it down with hot water. The cleaning properties of baking soda have the power to dissolve gunk in the pipes before it takes hold.

  2. I use this as a way to help clean out my kitchen sink drain every couple of months. I love that it’s cheap and safe to use. However, if you have a blockage problem, you should probably see a plumber or use another product like Green Gobbler.

  3. great advice! As a plumber, only thing I’d add is that if more then one of your drains is giving you problems – it means the blockage is further down in the mainline and you’ll need a pro drain cleaner. Vinegar & soda great for removing shallow blockages.. but it won’t hit the mainline!
